Assistant Swim Instructor Training

Tiny Tot - A Parent & Child Class
Age 18 months - 36 months
You and your child will have fun in the water doing activities emphasizing water adjustment and safety.
(Child MUST BE 18 months at the start of session; one adult must accompany each child in the water.)

Pre-beginners' Swim - A Parent & Child Class
Age 3 - 7 (or older, if not ready for Children's Swim, or is less than 48 inches tall.
Children will become comfortable in the water and have fun with their accompanying adult while learning introductory Red Cross swimming skills such as kicking, arm strokes, breath control and more. (Adults need not be skilled swimmers to participate!)

By Myself! (Summer)
Small group swim lessons for 6 & 7 year olds who are ready to try lessons alone, but are less than 48 inches tall.  Explore skills such as floating, breath control, kicking and beginning arm strokes.

Children's Swim Instruction - CURRENT Level Requirements!
Must be at least age 7 at start of class AND minimum height of 48 inches.
Our program is based on the American Red Cross method of progressive swim instruction.  Level prerequisites and class descriptions are listed below.  All students will be tested at the first class to ensure proper level placement.  Our instructors reserve the right to move students to the correct level.  Children may have to repeat a level two or three times before all skills are completed satisfactorily.

Level 1A Learn and practice submerging, breath control, floats (front & back), safety skills, and the front crawl (arms, kicking, and coordination). 
Goal:  Swim half the width of the pool with proper rotary breathing.
Level 1B Passed Level 1A; learn and practice breath control, safety skills, and front crawl (proper rotary breathing, arms kicking and coordination).
Goal:  Swim the complete width of the pool with proper rotary breathing.
Level 2 Passed Level 1 
Learn glides, bobbing, back crawl, elementary backstroke kick, jumping into deep water, treading water, and continue practicing coordinated front crawl.
Level 3 Passed Level 2
Learn elementary back stroke, butterfly kick and body motion, scissors kick, treading water (deep), kneeling dive into deep water, increase endurance and coordinated front and back crawl.
Level 4A Passed Level 3
Learn breaststroke and standing dive, refine elementary backstroke, increase distance for front and back crawl.
Level 4B Passed Level 4A
Learn sidestroke and butterfly.  Refine elementary backstroke, front and back crawl, and breaststroke.
Level 5 Passed Level 4B
Learn flip turns and surface dives.  Refine breaststroke, sidestroke, and butterfly, increase distance and continue refining front and back crawls and elementary backstroke.
Level 6
Fitness Swimmer
Winter Session
Passed Level 5
Learn turns, principles of setting up a fitness program, how to use the pace clock, and work on various training techniques.  Increase distance on front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke and butterfly.
Level 6
Personal Water Safety / Guardstart
Fall & Spring Session 
Passed Level 5
Learn self-rescue techniques, basic water safety skills, how to respond to pool emergencies and survival swimming.  Increase distance on front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, and butterfly.

Just For You 
Individualized swim instruction for 8 years & older
Are you or your child extremely afraid of the water?  Do you want to improve your strokes or learn new ones?  Do you have special needs?
Sign up for one or more of these 5-class sessions, designed to give swimmers one-on-one instruction.  Morning and early evening times available beginning June 10.  Download a schedule of classes (available soon!), or call the Recreation Department office, (414) 773-2900, to have a schedule mailed to you.

Teen Swim
Co-ed lessons for Age 11+
Swim program for middle and high school swimmers who need to work on beginner skills and are not comfortable in the children's Swim program.  Learn floats, rhythmic breathing, kicking, arm strokes and the coordinated front and back crawl.

Adult Swim Instruction
Beginning:  Have you always wanted to learn how to swim but didn't know where to go to get started?  Get comfortable in the water as you learn the front and back crawl strokes.
Continuing:  Work on stroke technique (including front crawl, breast and sidestroke) to improve efficiency for fitness or competition.  Develop your strokes for the pre-course swim test for Water Safety Instructor or Lifeguard course.  Should be comfortable in deep water.

Lifeguard Readiness
14 years +
This class is designed for those who are planning to take the lifeguard course and want to be ready for the prerequisite skills test.  Increase your endurance for front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke and sidestroke.  Learn surface dives, reaching and throwing assists, swimming on back holding an object (face out) and treading water.

Assistant Swim Instructor Training (Summer)
Join this Red Cross course, designed for enthusiastic people who love swimming!  Learn how to assist with our children's swim programs for ages 18 months to 10 years.  This course has both in-water and classroom portions and will cover stroke technique, instruction and class organization.  Students will also complete an apprenticeship with experienced teachers.
