School 2008 Schedule
Early
Morning Stretch
7:30 - 8:25am
Learn stretches and warm-ups, and how to prevent
injury. Participate in cardiovascular workouts such as
power walking, jogging, jumping rope and other high energy
activities to maintain a healthy heart.
Reading
Workshop
Designed to help students with reading skills and
strategies, independently and within small group
settings. The curriculum is continuous for the six
weeks; sign up for one or both sessions.
Learning
English
For students whose first language is not English.
Work on strengthening all four communication skills:
reading, writing, listening and speaking. Classes are
multi-level and will provide individualized and small-group
instruction. Students do not have to be enrolled in the
regular school year's ESL program.
Creative Writing
Workshop
Students will be
given the opportunity
to develop their writing skills by learning to write, edit and
illustrate their own stories. Initiative and creativity
is encouraged. Create new versions of favorite stories
or unlock imagination to produce original stories.
Students should sign up for one of the sessions at grade
level.
World
Language Exploration
(Spanish, French, German)
In this introductory class, students will explore world
language and culture through games, music and art.
PE 4
Life
Participate in a variety of physical activities that you can
do throughout your lifetime: volleyball, badminton,
tennis, rock wall climbing, roller blade skating and dance.
Drawing and
Painting
Designed to provide
opportunities for developing the interest and talents of each
individual. Different media and techniques will be used
to sketch, draw and paint a variety of subjects.
3-D Art
Experiences
Design principles and a
variety of craft areas will be explored, helping students
produce a variety of sculptures.
Math
Workshop
This course was designed
for the student who wants to strengthen skills in the strand
of number and operations with an emphasis on problem solving.
A variety of strategies and activities will be used to build
fluency with basic facts, fact extensions, and computation
appropriate for each grade level. Sign up for either
three-week session or for both sessions at grade level.
Science
Investigations
Emphasis is on experimentation. Students will participate
in hands-on experiences and activities that will investigate
topics in the areas of life, physical and earth science.
Students should sign up for either session at grade level.
Keyboarding
Introduces and reinforces the proper techniques of
keyboarding. Students progress at an individual rate as
they are exposed to proper keying techniques while using
computers. May take one or both sessions.
Computer
Applications
Students will be exposed to a variety of computer
applications, providing hands-on experiences using an
assortment of software, network programming and Microsoft
Office programs. The applications of computer graphics
may be presented along with web page design. Sign up
for one session at grade level.
Math
Applications & Enrichment
Students will extend their learning of mathematics with a
focus on problem solving and reasoning. Investigations in
geometry will be the strand for the first three-weeks. The
second session will focus on investigations in measurement.
Sign up for either three-week session or for both.
Foreign
Language Exploration
This is an introduction to foreign language and culture
(Spanish, German & French). Students will explore
foreign language through games, music and art.
Welcome
to Middle School (Grade 5 completed)
This class is designed to expose new 6th graders to the Middle
School experience. The class will provide a transition
from elementary school. Study skills, organization,
team-building and decision-making activities will be
emphasized.
Astronomy
Stars and their constellations, the planets in our solar
system, moons, space exploration, extra-terrestrial life,
comets, meteorites, black holes, nebulae, stars and the Milky
Way Galaxy are just a few of the exciting topics you will
explore in the Gary E. Sampson Planetarium.
Summer
Orchestra (grades 4 & 5)
This class features
bluegrass, folk, popular and classical music in an effort to
help students grow in their ability to play and read
music. String instrument technique and tone production
will be stressed, while using materials that are very
enjoyable for students.
Summer
Band (grade 5)
Develop and strengthen music skills during the summer
session. This course is designed to improve technical,
musical and note-reading ability.

An exciting opportunity designed for students enrolled in
Summer School that may need an extended day*. Activities
include arts and crafts, weekly themes, games, learning
