Reading Workshop
Designed to help students with reading skills and strategies, independently and within small group settings.  The curriculum is continuous for the six weeks; sign up for one or both sessions.

Math Applications & Enrichment
Students will extend their learning of mathematics with a focus on problem solving and reasoning. Investigations in geometry will be the strand for the first three-weeks. The second session will focus on investigations in measurement. Sign up for either three-week session or for both.
 

Student Technology Academy
Develop a familiarity and deeper understanding of one of the following technology strands.  Utilize specific technologies to create a project, and hear from community members working in these areas to better understand how your interest can turn into a future career.  Choose ONE of the following stands:
     Movie Making:  Get on the director's side of the camera.  Write an original script, film your movie and use video editing software to create your own film.
     Video Gaming:  Use new game design software to create and play different kinds of computer games.  Learn more about the features that make games fun, playable and challenging.  Share games with others and play games too!
     Crime Scene Investigation:  Learn what it takes to be a real crime scene investigator by conducting research, finding clues and gathering evidence, and making conclusions about a simulated crime.
     Podcasting:  If you have a story to tell or an opinion to voice, learn to Podcast.  Create an original script, the record, edit and add music with Audacity software.  Upload your completed project to the Internet for family and friends to hear.

Learning English
For students whose first language is not English.  Work on strengthening all four communication skills:  reading, writing, listening and speaking.  Classes are multi-level and will provide individualized and small-group instruction.  Students do not have to be enrolled in the regular school year's ESL program.

Creative Writing Workshop
Students will be given the opportunity to develop their writing skills by learning to write, edit and illustrate their own stories.  Initiative and creativity is encouraged.  Create new versions of favorite stories or unlock imagination to produce original stories.  (Students should sign up for one of the sessions at grade level.)

Drawing and Painting
Designed to provide opportunities for developing the interest and talents of each individual.  Different media and techniques will be used to sketch, draw and paint a variety of subjects.

3-D Art Experiences
Design principles and a variety of craft areas will be explored, helping students produce a variety of sculptures.

Math Workshop
This course was designed for the student who wants to strengthen skills in the strand of number and operations with an emphasis on problem solving. A variety of strategies and activities will be used to build fluency with basic facts, fact extensions, and computation appropriate for each grade level. Sign up for either three-week session or for both sessions at grade level.

Science Investigations

Emphasis is on experimentation.  Students will participate in hands-on experiences and activities that will investigate topics in the areas of life, physical and earth science.  Students should sign up for either session at grade level.

Keyboarding
Introduces and reinforces the proper techniques of keyboarding.  Students progress at an individual rate as they are exposed to proper keying techniques while using computers. May take one or both sessions.

Computer Applications
Students will be exposed to a variety of computer applications, providing hands-on experiences using an assortment of software, network programming and Microsoft Office programs.  The applications of computer graphics may be presented along with web page design.  Sign up for one session at grade level.

Astronomy (grade 6)
Starts and their constellations, the planets in our solar system, moons, space exploration, extra-terrestrial life, comets, meteorites, black holes, nebulae, stars and the Milky Way Galaxy are just a few of the exciting topics you will explore in the Gary E. Sampson Planetarium.

Summer Orchestra
Features bluegrass, folk, popular and classical music in an effort to help students grow in their ability to play and read music.  String instrument technique and tone production will be stressed, while using materials that are very enjoyable for students.  Students will participate in a group performance during the last week of class.

Summer Band
Develop and strengthen music skills during the summer session.  This course is designed to improve technical, musical and note-reading ability.

Summer Jazz
For students currently enrolled in band whose primary instrument is saxophone, trombone, trumpet, keyboard, guitar, bass guitar or percussion.  Focus on developing jazz performance skills in a contemporary and practical "combo" ensemble.

Science Academy
Grade 8 (completed)
(earn 1.0 credit)
Intended for students who have completed eighth grade and who want to accelerate their science experience.  The Science Academy offers the freshman science experience (physics/earth-space) prior to entering freshman year of high school.

Read 180
Reading intervention for students reading at least one year below grade level.  Students will spend 20 minutes of the day working on an individualized computer program designed to increase their spelling, word attack, fluency and comprehension skills.  Additional time will be spent reading high interest novels, working on strategies through daily activities and projects designed to improve reading and written language skills.  Seats will be limited to 15 at both sites.

Bridge the Gap to High School  Grade 8 (completed)
To help make the transition from 8th grade to high school, students will receive instruction in study skills, test-taking strategies, organization, time management, and more.  Students will also improve academic skills in English and Math through individual assessment and instruction.

Art Foundations-Semester 1  Grade 8 (completed)
(earn .5 credit)
Focus on the basics of seeing and drawing accurately.  Students will earn blind contour, contour, sensitive line, negative space, composition, shading and value, and will be introduced to portraits.  All drawings will be black/white; color will be introduced in second semester.

Weight training and Conditioning  Grade 8 (completed)
This non-credit course is designed to meet the strength, speed and agility of high school athletes.  Participants will enhance their overall fitness and become more aware of how to develop their minds and bodies.

Health  Grade 8 (completed)
(earn .5 credit)
Study the following health strands:  Health Choices and Behaviors, Mental and Emotional Health, Emotional Problems, Nutrition, Substance Use and Abuse, Infectious and Lifestyle Diseases, the Life Cycle, First Aid and Safety.

Physical Education 9  Grade 8 (completed)
(earn .5 credit)
This required course is based on a pyramid design of health related fitness at the lowest level, then performance related fitness at the next and the third level related to group and individual expression through sport activities.

Oral Communications Fundamentals  Grade 8 (completed)
(earn .5 credit)
This required course is designed to increase student's knowledge of the communication process and develop skills to communicate effectively, primarily through speaking and listening.

Sewing For Fun and Fashion  Grade 8 (completed)
(earn .5 credit)
No experience necessary!  In this hands-on course, operate a sewing machine, read a pattern, and learn the fundamentals of sewing, all while creating two sewing projects.  You will need to buy your own fabric, thread and pattern; all other equipment and supplies are provided.

Algebra, Semester 1 & Semester 2**
Grade 8 (completed)
(earn .5 credit)
This course is offered to students who have mastered basic mathematics concepts and skills through 8th grade. Content will include: operations, equations, functions and elementary statistics. A scientific calculator is needed. Students must have previously completed Semester 1 to register for Semester 2.
